Luck Pillars (Da Yun): Your BaZi Chart's 10-Year Cycles

Your natal chart — the four pillars fixed at birth — is only half the picture. Luck pillars (大运) are a sequence of roughly 10-year periods, each carrying its own stem and branch, layered on top of that fixed chart. How your starting age is calculated

The classical method measures the gap in days between your birth and the nearest solar term boundary, then converts that gap to a starting age at roughly 3 days per year. Whether you count toward the next solar term or back toward the previous one depends on two things: your gender, and whether your birth-year heavenly stem is yin or yang. That direction also determines whether your luck pillars run forward or backward through the sexagenary cycle from your month pillar.
